Blood tests
Blood tests
Blood tests are widely used in the diagnosis and management of IBD. Blood is drawn and subject to various tests, depending on the information required. Tests include
- Full blood count (FBC, or complete blood count [CBC]): a measure of the cells present in blood (i.e., red cells, white cells, platelets). Can identify potential inflammation or anaemia
- Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) and C-Reactive Protein (CRP): used as markers of inflammation
- Liver function test (LFT): can alert your doctor to potential complications of the liver, or used to monitor the effect of medications on the liver
- Ferritin (iron) and transferrin test: can be used to detect iron deficiency
Tests for different vitamins and minerals (e.g., B12, folic acid, calcium) are available to test deficiencies that may arise due to inadequate absorption or inadequate diet
